Van de Ven Brace Halts The Toffees' Unbeaten Streak at New Stadium

The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup match against Newcastle.
