In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an bold commencement to his administration.
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.
Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”
Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.
The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.
Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:
The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.
Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.
In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
